Dig into geology with our Rocks & Minerals Unit Study Kit!
Schoolhouse Discoveries hands-on unit studies are designed for homeschool families and can serve as a core Science and Social Studies curriculum for grades K–4.
Each kit includes 20+ open-and-go lessons and also weaves in Language Arts, Math, Art, STEM, Sensory Play, Cooking, Health, and Movement.
By using multiple themed kits throughout the year, families can build a complete, well-rounded curriculum rooted in hands-on, family-style learning.
Centered around the book Let’s Go Rock Collecting by Roma Gans, this unit invites your kids to explore the amazing world beneath their feet—from how rocks are formed to how we use them in everyday life.
Your kids will explore types of rocks, minerals, fossils, erosion, and the rock cycle through activities like:
- Go rock collecting
- Words rock! language arts activity
- Describe and classify rock properties
- Paint a rock with natural patterns
- Mix minerals to make mineral dough
- Interview a geologist
- Rock cycle cookie bar recipe
- Jelly bean rock cycle experiment
- Model Earth’s layers using clay
- Build a salt dough volcano
This hands-on kit brings earth science to life in fun and creative ways that work for multiple ages. Whether your kids are digging in the dirt or baking up geology-inspired snacks, they’ll be learning across subjects while having a blast.
Perfect for homeschoolers, co-ops, or those using charter school funds or educational scholarships.

Learning Tips
Learning Tips
We’ve divided the learning experiences into eight sections, and we recommend doing the activities in the order suggested as some build upon the next. However, you don’t need to complete all the lesson activities at once if that’s too much for your schedule. Just pause and pick up where you left off next time. Doing these activities two days a week will take four weeks to complete the unit. The activities in this kit were designed for K to 4th graders. But we know kids are at all different levels and interests, so feel free to skip or add-to an activity if it isn’t right for your child(ren). That’s what Schoolhouse Discoveries are all about - having fun learning and finding ways that best fit your needs.
