About Schoolhouse Discoveries

What is Schoolhouse Discoveries?

Schoolhouse Discoveries offers family-style unit study curriculum that brings multiple subjects together in one immersive learning experience. Each unit is designed for children of different ages to explore the same theme together, allowing families to learn side by side while each child engages at their own level.

Through hands-on activities, reading, writing, art, music, movement, and creative projects, subjects are woven together so learning feels natural and connected. For example, a single theme might inspire a story to read, a creative writing exercise, an art project, and a movement activity—all linked to the central topic. This integrated approach encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, while making lessons meaningful and memorable.

By learning as a family, children not only develop knowledge across multiple subjects—they also strengthen collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills, creating shared experiences that last long beyond the lesson itself. Schoolhouse Discoveries units make it simple to bring multiple subjects to life while keeping the whole family engaged, curious, and learning together.

What ages or grade levels are the kits designed for?

Schoolhouse Discoveries unit studies are designed for K–6th grade learners and are fully adaptable to fit your family’s needs. Younger children love the hands-on activities, read-alouds, and creative projects, while older students can dive deeper with independent reading, writing, and research.

Each kit is intentionally flexible, so one theme can engage multiple ages at the same time. Lessons and activities can be scaled up or simplified, allowing every child to learn at their own level while participating in shared, family-style learning. Our units grow with your kids, making it easy to explore a topic together while meeting the needs of your entire family.

How long does it take to complete a kit?

Each unit study kit includes multiple lessons with several hands-on activities per lesson, designed to engage children of different ages and learning styles.

If your family uses the kit two to three times a week, most units take about four to six weeks to complete. Some lessons may require more time and can easily be broken up over multiple days. Families can also extend the theme by exploring recommended books, videos, and additional activities, or move more quickly through the lessons to finish in two to three weeks.

Our kits are designed to be flexible, so you can use them in a way that fits your family’s schedule and learning pace.

What is included in each unit study kit?

Each Schoolhouse Discoveries unit study kit includes everything you need to explore a theme in a hands-on, multi-subject way.

Physical kits come with:

  • A themed book
  • A full-color teaching guide with 20+ engaging lessons & activities
  • Printed activity pages
  • Most of the art and sensory supplies for the hands-on projects
  • Collectors sticker
  • QR code with video links & more

Digital kits include:

  • A digital teaching booklet
  • Printable activity pages
  • QR code with video links & more

Every kit—physical or digital—also provides:

  • A list of relevant learning objectives (state standards) covered in the unit
  • Digital copies of worksheets (so you can print extras if needed)
  • A supply list for any basic materials not included in the kit
  • A supplemental book list to dive deeper into the topic

These kits are designed to be flexible and adaptable, so children of different ages can explore the same theme together in a family-style learning experience.

What’s included in a physical kit vs. a digital kit?

Physical kits include the core materials you need for hands-on learning: a book, full-color teaching guide, printed activity pages, and most of the supplies needed for projects and activities.

Digital kits include a downloadable teaching booklet, printable activity pages, and links to videos and resources. You provide your own supplies, giving you flexibility to use what you already have at home.

Do I need to buy additional supplies?

Physical kits include most of the materials needed for activities, but you may occasionally use common household items (like scissors, tape, or pantry ingredients).

Digital kits require you to gather supplies yourself, and a simple shopping list is provided to make this easy.

A supply list is included with each theme.

View the supply lists here.

How many kits do I need for a full school year?

Most families use 6–7 kits to cover a full school year of science and social studies.

You can go at your own pace, but this number of kits typically provides enough content for consistent, in-depth exploration throughout the year.

As always, be sure to check your state standards and subject requirements to ensure your curriculum meets your needs.

Are lesson plans included or is prep required?

Yes — lesson plans are included.

Each kit features a step-by-step teaching guide with clear instructions, activity directions, and pacing suggestions, making it an open-and-go experience with minimal prep.

Do you offer support if I have questions while teaching?

Our kits are designed to be truly open-and-go, with clear step-by-step guidance, simple instructions, and built-in pacing so you can jump in with confidence — even if you don’t have a teaching background.

Most families find they can simply follow the guide and enjoy learning together. And if a question ever comes up, our team is always here to help.

What are the usage rules for digital kits?

Digital kits are licensed for personal household use only and are intended for use within your immediate family. Files may not be shared, forwarded, resold, or uploaded to shared drives or online classrooms.

If you plan to use materials in a classroom, co-op, tutoring group, or any group setting, a business or classroom license is required.

This helps us continue creating new themes and high-quality resources for families while keeping pricing accessible.

Are digital kits printable more than once?

Yes. Once downloaded, you can print the activity pages as many times as needed for your household, making them great for multiple children.

Initial downloads through the store are limited to two download attempts, so we recommend saving the files to your device or cloud storage right away.

Digital kits are licensed for personal household use only. Please do not share, distribute, or forward the files. Schools, co-ops, and group settings must purchase a business or classroom license to use digital materials.

Where can I find the supplemental book list and standards for each kit?

Each kit comes with a recommended supplemental book list to help you dive deeper into the theme, and a list of educational standards covered by the activities.

For your convenience, we also provide links to these resources directly on our website, so you can view the book lists and standards before purchasing or use them as a reference while teaching.

Shipping & Orders

What are your processing and shipping times?

In-stock physical kits typically ship within 5-7 business days. Once your order ships, you’ll receive tracking information so you can follow its delivery.

Once shipped, delivery usually takes 3–7 business days, depending on your location and the carrier.

For preorders or newly released themes, shipping timelines will be listed on the product page, and kits will ship as soon as they are available.

Digital kits are delivered immediately after purchase, so you can download and start right away.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is free on all unit study kits.

Occasionally, shipping charges may apply to select “last chance” or specialty items added to the shop, but standard kits always ship free.

Curriculum & Learning

Can the kits be used with different learning styles?

Yes. The activities are designed to support a variety of learning styles, including visual, auditory, and hands-on learners.

Because lessons include reading, creating, discussing, and movement, children can engage with the material in ways that work best for them.

How are the kits different from traditional curriculum?

Instead of teaching subjects separately, our unit studies connect multiple subjects through one theme. This creates a more engaging, hands-on experience where kids learn through projects, exploration, and real-world connections rather than worksheets alone.

What is a Unit Study?

A unit study is a curriculum that brings multiple subjects—like reading, writing, science, history, art, and more—together under a single theme. Instead of learning each subject separately, students explore a topic in a connected, hands-on way, making learning more meaningful and memorable.

Unit studies are flexible and adaptable, so activities can be tailored for different ages, learning styles, and skill levels. This approach encourages curiosity, creativity, and real-world application, making it an ideal method for immersive, family-style homeschooling experiences.

Are these kits a supplement or a core curriculum?

Schoolhouse Discoveries unit study kits can be used as a supplement or as your primary curriculum for certain subjects.

Many families use our kits to enrich their homeschool with hands-on, multi-subject learning. However, if you choose a mix of 6–7 kits with a focus on science and social studies/history, you can cover a full school year of content for those subjects.

Each kit includes clearly outlined learning objectives and a list of educational standards covered, helping you see exactly what skills and topics are addressed. While our instruction guides incorporate elements of math and language arts, many families choose to pair our units with a separate core math and language arts program for a more structured progression in those areas.

As always, be sure to check your individual state homeschool requirements to determine what works best for your family. Standards covered are available to view in each product listing.

Are the kits secular or religious?

Our curriculum is secular, or neutral.

Our mission is to empower parents to teach their children, and we respect each family’s choice in how they incorporate faith, values, and traditions into their homeschool. We strive to provide materials that are engaging, hands-on, and rooted in scientific and historical accuracy.

Because our approach is neutral, families who wish to incorporate their own beliefs or religious perspectives can easily do so in a way that aligns with their values.

Yes — and no!

Any in-stock kits can be purchased individually and will ship right away.

We also offer an automatic subscription option for families who want each new theme delivered as it’s released. Subscribers receive $8 off each kit, and new themes ship approximately every 6–8 weeks. There are no long-term commitments, and you can manage your subscription anytime.

At the beginning of the school year, we offer a School Year Bundle, which allows families to preorder the full year of new themes at once. As each theme is released throughout the year, it ships to you automatically. This option is especially helpful for Charter School and Scholarship program families who need to plan purchases in advance.

We also offer a Create Your Own Bundle option. When you purchase three or more in-stock kits, you receive $7 off each kit. (This option applies to in-stock kits only and does not include preorders.)

Whether you prefer to order one theme at a time or plan ahead and save, we offer flexible options to fit your family’s needs.

Will I get to choose my themes when I bundle?

Yes! With our Create Your Own Bundle, you get to hand-pick the themes that work best for your family. Simply choose three or more in-stock kits, and you’ll receive the bundle discount while selecting the exact topics you want.

This option is perfect for families who want flexibility and the ability to customize their school year around their children’s interests.

(If you choose the School Year Bundle, themes are sent in release order as they launch throughout the year.)

Using with Multiple Children

Will one kit work for multiple children?

Absolutely! Schoolhouse Discoveries unit studies are designed for family-style learning, so children of different ages and abilities can explore the same theme together. Many lessons and hands-on projects can be done collaboratively, making it easy for siblings to learn side by side.

Physical kits include enough supplies for one child, and the teaching guide and activity pages allow you to print extras so multiple children can participate. If you’d like, we also offer sibling add-ons for an additional cost. These include extra printed activity pages and a few additional supplies—not a full duplicate of the main kit—but they make it easier for siblings to join in without needing to source extra materials yourself.

Digital kits are also flexible, allowing multiple learners to follow along with the same activities and guidance, and you can print additional pages as needed.

What is a sibling add-on?

Sibling add-ons are optional add-ons available for each physical kit theme. They include additional printed activity pages and a few extra materials (such as select craft supplies) for a child who would prefer to complete projects independently rather than sharing the supplies included in the main kit. The supplies in a sibling add-on are not an exact duplicate of everything included in the main kit, but they are designed to make participation easier for an additional learner.

Sibling add-ons are available for purchase with a main kit and cannot be purchased on their own. The exception is for families ordering through an approved state scholarship program or ClassWallet. For more details about those options, please visit our Scholarship page.

Can I order a sibling add-on separately?

Sibling add-ons must be purchased with a main kit of the same theme.

The only exception is for families ordering through approved scholarship programs — in those cases, sibling add-ons may be purchased separately. For details on ordering through a scholarship program, please visit our Scholarship page.
