Push, pull, roll, and race with this Forces and Motion Unit Study Kit!
This STEM-focused unit invites kids to discover how things move and why. Through engaging experiments and creative challenges, learners will explore pushes and pulls, gravity, friction, acceleration, magnetism, and Newton’s Laws of Motion in a playful, hands-on way. By observing, testing ideas, and experimenting, your kids will see how forces affect the motion of objects in the world around them.
Your kids will explore science through activities like:
- Investigate pushes and pulls with simple experiments
- Explore gravity and how it affects moving objects
- Test friction using different surfaces
- Build and test ramps to observe motion and speed
- Experiment with magnets and discover magnetic forces
- Learn about the futuristic maglev train that floats above its tracks!
- Explore Newton’s Laws of Motion with fun demonstrations
- Create and race a balloon-powered car
- Measure and record how far objects travel
And more!
Whether they’re racing balloon cars, or experimenting with magnets and ramps, your learners will connect with the science of forces and motion in a fun and meaningful way.
This unit study includes 25+ activities, organized into eight easy-to-follow, open-and-go lessons. Schoolhouse Discoveries hands-on unit studies are designed for homeschool families and can serve as a core Science and Social Studies curriculum for grades K–4 or a supplement for 5–6th grade. Each unit also weaves in Language Arts, Math, Art, STEM, Sensory Play, Cooking, Health, and Movement.
By using multiple themed kits throughout the year, families can build a complete, well-rounded curriculum rooted in hands-on, family-style learning.
Have more than one child participating?

Learning Tips
Learning Tips
We’ve divided the learning experiences into eight sections, and we recommend doing the activities in the order suggested as some build upon the next. However, you don’t need to complete all the lesson activities at once if that’s too much for your schedule. Just pause and pick up where you left off next time. Doing these activities two days a week will take four weeks to complete the unit. The activities in this kit were designed for K to 4th graders. But we know kids are at all different levels and interests, so feel free to skip or add-to an activity if it isn’t right for your child(ren). That’s what Schoolhouse Discoveries are all about - having fun learning and finding ways that best fit your needs.
