The download includes all the printable lessons, activities, and instructions from our popular hands-on kit, giving you the flexibility to gather your own materials and complete the unit on your own schedule.
It is recommended that you obtain a copy of Johnny Tremain by Esther Hoskins Forbes. This book will be suggested many times throughout the unit study.
Step into Colonial Boston and Witness the Birth of a Nation
This upper elementary and middle school unit study brings history to life through the pages of Johnny Tremain, a powerful novel set in 1774 Boston, where unrest brews and revolution looms.
As students follow Johnny’s personal struggles and triumphs, they'll explore the major events and ideas that led to the American Revolution. From economic tensions to bold acts of protest, this unit invites learners to dig deep into what it meant to fight for independence.
Hands-on, cross-curricular lessons include:
- Making Johnny cakes
- Playing a “tea bag toss” protest game
- Strategizing like revolutionaries with a card-and-dice game
- Researching key figures of the American Revolution
- Writing a personal declaration of independence
Whether you're studying history, literature, or civics, this unit offers an immersive look at the founding of the United States and the individuals who shaped its earliest ideals.
Perfect for grades 5–8, this curriculum is ideal for homeschool families seeking meaningful, open-and-go lessons that connect deeper learning with unforgettable experiences.

Learning Tips
Learning Tips
We’ve divided the learning experiences into eight sections, and we recommend doing the activities in the order suggested as some build upon the next. However, you don’t need to complete all the lesson activities at once if that’s too much for your schedule. Just pause and pick up where you left off next time. Doing these activities two days a week will take four weeks to complete the unit. The activities in this kit were designed for K to 4th graders. But we know kids are at all different levels and interests, so feel free to skip or add-to an activity if it isn’t right for your child(ren). That’s what Schoolhouse Discoveries are all about - having fun learning and finding ways that best fit your needs.
