Build a Toothpick Constellation

An alternate way to complete the Build a Constellation activity in Astronomy: mysteries of the sky.

Materials needed: Constellation cards, toothpicks, and mini marshmallows.

Remember: The marshmallows represent the stars, and the toothpicks represent the imaginary lines connecting them.

1

Choose a card

Pick a constellation card to use as your guide. Count the stars and notice how they are connected.

2

Place the stars

Use one mini marshmallow for each star.

Connect the stars by pushing toothpicks into the marshmallows to connect them, following the lines on your card.

3

Check your constellation

Compare your model to the card. Make sure the stars are connected in the right pattern.

4

Try another!

Choose a new card and build a different constellation.
