This kit is packed full of supplies and learning experiences centered around the rushing river, from source to sea. Learners will read a gorgeously illustrated fiction picture book about a boy who spends the summer at his grandmother’s river home, map a river’s journey from beginning to end, research the river habitat, hunt for animal tracks, write about water safety, discover the water cycle, paint watercolor river scenes, build a small-world river, and more!

We’ve divided the learning experiences into eight sections, and we recommend doing the activities in the order suggested as some build upon the next. However, you don’t need to complete all the lesson activities at once if that’s too much for your schedule. Just pause, and pick up where you left off next time. Doing these activities two days a week will take four weeks to complete the unit. The activities in this kit were designed for K to 4th graders. But we know kids are at all different levels and interests, so feel free to skip or add-to an activity if it isn’t right for your child(ren). That’s what Schoolhouse Discoveries are all about – having fun learning and finding ways that best fit your needs.

Extra note to parents and teachers: The lessons and activities all about the river and can be completed as explained throughout the instruction booklet. However, if you can visit a river (or even a creek or stream) during this unit, immersing in nature and playing at the river introduces a whole different set of learning experiences! Encourage kids to use their five senses as they explore the river habitat and then bring these experiences back to the book learning to make text-to-self connections.
